Celebrating sin on the main street of Nelson – Saligia Art Gallery

Celebrating sin on the main street of Nelson

Sin is celebrated in a high-profile location every day in Nelson – though not in the way you might think.

Saligia Art Gallery. Studio’s name is based on a Latin acronym for the so-called seven deadly sins.

And while we must confess that we don’t actually practice any of them – during working hours, especially – we do admit to being not particularly PC in our beliefs or the artworks that stem from them.

Saligia is located at 31 Trafalgar St on the corner of Elliott St in a lovely old 1880s building. It features the work of multi-award-winning artist Nikki Romney, whose work combines painstakingly detailed traditional realism with strong modern themes.

Her partner Alan Clarke adds a contemporary twist with bold deconstructed landscapes and the pair also work together on a collaborative series of repurposed objects collectively known as Punktique.

One recent work features an antique wooden devil-figure the couple purchased recently on holiday in Cologne.  He’s sitting proudly in a punked-up shoe-last car towing his latest victim… a Devil Drives Prada sort of theme.

Nikki Romney’s latest serious work came in the days after the Christchurch mosque shootings.

She depicts Jacinda Adern as The Weeping Madonna, wearing a cross between a hijab and nun’s veil. In the gold foil background are various world-view slogans and sayings from both sides of the debate over Islamic immigration.

Another addition to the gallery walls is the punk-funk-pop art style of new artist Roguish, who brings a Banksy-like twist to his work.

Having worked alongside French-American artist Mr Brainwash for a while, Roguish brings international street-cred and a distinctive style to the gallery – and (for now), affordable Nelson prices.

Call in and see us some time. We’re different, funky, fun and a highly original addition to Nelson’s renowned creative scene.
