Zarrie Wood will be in Couture at the Cathedral a fashion event happening on October 16 to fundraise for the Nelson Regional Breast and Gynecological Cancer Trust.

Fashion and faith are joining hands in a fashion fundraiser, Couture at the Cathedral.

Nelson’s Christ Church Cathedral will be transformed to host a catwalk, a charity auction and an evening out for ticket holders.

Couture at the Cathedral organiser and Morrison Square centre manager Angela Leonard has been the brains behind a number of Nelson Regional Breast and Gynaecologial Cancer Trust (NRBGCT) fundraising events. This year she said she was aiming for “bigger and better”.

Holding the fashion show at the cathedral was “something a wee bit different” while also showing it was a “beautiful venue” to be utilised by the community.

The two-hour event will showcase garments from Morrison Square clothing and accessory outlets including Portmans, Jacqui E, Hartleys, Dotti, Merrick, Amazon, Just Jeans, The Rock Box, Rodd and Gunn, and Shine on Hardy Street.

“We’ll be showing a bit of spring and summer fashion that’s coming in, so there’s something for everybody, showcasing what the retailers have in store.”

Leonard is a strong supporter of the breast cancer trust owing to having a number of people in her life affected by breast cancer.

BRADEN FASTIER
Morrison Square centre manager Angela Leonard and breast surgeon Ros Pochin at The High Tea & Fashion Show on Morrison to raise money for the NRBGCT in 2017.

She said the Nelson community had helped raise more than $65,000 for NRBGCT over the last three years.

Formed in 2010, the trust supports breast cancer patients and their families in the top of the south. It relies solely on donations and fundraising, with all money raised going directly back into the Nelson, Golden Bay and Marlborough region.

NRBGCT ambassador and surgeon, Ros Pochin said the organisation was about supporting local woman dealing with cancers “and making sure they feel nurtured and supported in their community, and allowing them to stay in their community”.

It provides patients with financial assistance, advice and aftercare programmes, including exercise classes.

She said ongoing exercise programmes were really important because they were empowering for woman.

“Particularly because if you’ve had what is body-shape changing surgery, you’re self conscious about going to a normal gym class.”

She said while financial support was a big part of the service, it was the little things that showed cancer sufferers they weren’t alone.

A recent initiative provides chemotherapy patients with bags containing items such as ginger tea, socks and mint balm.

Pochin said it would help people going through a “fairly crappy time” by giving them “a little bit of TLC”.
