Your newly completed terminal is now open .. check it out in our Check-In
A Message from the CEO
Since our last newsletter local body elections have taken place and Nelson Airport Ltd would like to congratulate all new Councillors to the respective district boards, and to Mayor Reece and Mayor King for their appointments. We would also like to thank both former Mayor Kempthorne and Mayor Reece for their unwavering support during the Airport Terminal build project spanning over a four year period.
From opening to the public on Tuesday 22nd October the new terminal building has exceeded our expectations, not only in space and grandeur, but also its’ functionality. Having the baggage collection belt inside the terminal has also delighted many a local travelling through for the first time – although somewhat nostalgically. We are delighted to welcome McCashins into the new bar area and look forward to Air New Zealand completing the fit out of their new Regional Lounge on the west mezzanine level prior to Christmas.
Whilst Jetstar might have departed our region, Air New Zealand, Sounds Air and Originair have all added additional flights and in some cases new routes, so we expect another busy summer ahead of us.
As for 2020, we have a number of exciting projects in the planning stages and look forward to sharing more detail on these in our next edition.
In the meantime we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe, happy and healthy holiday season!
Chief Executive Officer, Nelson Airport
NUMBERS AT A GLANCE
The official opening ceremony for our new terminal building was held on Saturday 19 October 2019 with The Right Honourable Jacinda Ardern Prime Minister of New Zealand unveiling a plaque and receiving a gift from our Chief Executive Robert Evans. The ceremony was attended by local and national dignitaries, iwi, airport staff and all contractors involved in the design and build of this new state-of-the-art building.
The first day of operation in the new terminal was Tuesday 22nd October. The overnight move involved many people and a lot of hard work. Thanks to everyone who contributed to make it look like such a smooth move! We celebrated with the community and had a lot of fun with Nelson’s very own Lightbulb Men, The Breeze, The Mix, 3RingRiot, Pics Peanut Butter, Appleby Icecream, Nelson Jazz Club, some of our Mighty Mako Men, and our fabulous terminal retailers, Sublime Coffee, the Nelson Store, Wayfarer Cafe and the new McCashin’s Bar. A massive thank you to all those who helped us celebrate, providing fantastic prizes and giveaways, and making it such a memorable day.
